A Pergola in Dubai is a post and beam structure that forms a shaded walkway or sheltered area, usually over a patio or deck. They are often used as an extension of a building, but their general purpose is to provide a focal point in a garden or outdoor area. A pergola is often confused with a gazebo but has a more open structure, while a gazebo is generally freestanding with a vaulted roof and usually serves as an entryway.
Historically, pergolas were built of stone, brick and wood and have been seen in gardens since Roman times, when the structures originated from exterior walls and were supported on one side by piers or columns. Pergolas were built by architects in the Italian Renaissance to imitate the villas of Imperial Rome.
Today, people are becoming more creative in designing their outdoor spaces, resulting in garden structures that combine different elements to meet individual needs. Supposedly, the “law” of pergola states that it must not have fixed sides, but since no two gardens are alike, you can design your pergola however you like.
WHAT IS A PERGOLA USED FOR?
The possibilities for a pergola are endless, but these are some of our favourite uses.
SHADE WITH ERECT A PERGOLA
A pergola is not designed to block the sun completely, but to provide protection from direct sunlight while allowing air to circulate freely. While the beam construction of the roof only provides partial shade, you can grow plants on top or add a bamboo cover to create a shaded area during the heat of the day. You can also add sheer curtains, trellises or fence panels on the sides to close off the space. Pergolas are sometimes used as a type of awning that is placed on the side of a building to prevent the sun from shining through the windows and heating up the house in the summer.
EXTEND YOUR LIVING SPACE WITH A PERGOLA
Outdoor dining is arguably one of the best things about summer, but on particularly sunny days, extra protection may be necessary. A pergola over a patio can create an intimate dining area that adds a luxurious ambiance to any garden party or simple outdoor meal.
CREATE A GREEN SCREEN WITH A PERGOLA
A single pergola can be used anywhere in the garden as a divider, much like a trellis. Add wires to help plants grow, and eventually you have a lush divider that provides shade and privacy and also encourages wildlife.
ADD PARTITIONS WITH A PERGOLA
You may want to separate one area of your garden from another, perhaps to create different themes within your garden, separate seating and dining areas, or for other functional reasons. One customer installed a single pergola with short trellis panels and a gate to separate his swimming pool, making it safer, especially for dogs and small children. Dividing a garden can also make it more manageable.
However you choose to use your pergola, there are so many ways to use it and customise it to your needs, but look for products that will not rot or rust and come with a long warranty. Contact us
